The Sidings – Grand Canal Dock

the_sidings_terraces

The Sidings is a landmark ‘triple-platinum’ certified development, recognised for its commitment to sustainable, people-focused design. RMDA was proud to contribute the landscape architecture, creating a series of outdoor spaces that merge ecological performance with the energy of Dublin’s docklands.

Our design delivers rooftop terraces across three floors, offering panoramic city views while enhancing biodiversity and supporting outdoor wellbeing. At street level, the public realm draws inspiration from the site’s industrial heritage: paving patterns echo the historic cobblestones of Grand Canal Dock, while reclaimed stone was used to reconstruct a southern boundary wall. New limestone boundary walls reference the archaeology of the area, embedding the project in its cultural context.

The landscape strategy integrates green infrastructure with the urban fabric, prioritising sustainable commuting through dedicated bicycle facilities and enhancing comfort through resilient planting and thoughtful circulation. Subtle lighting, seating, and planting layers create welcoming spaces that balance activity and respite.

In tandem with its innovative architecture, RMDA’s landscape design helps establish The Sidings as a healthy, vibrant workplace within Dublin’s tech district—one that celebrates heritage, promotes biodiversity, and sets a benchmark for sustainable urban placemaking.
