Windmill

Ronan MacDiarmada & Associates Ltd provided full landscape architectural services for the Windmill development in Porterstown, Dublin 15—a 211-unit apartment scheme that completes a previously unfinished site adjacent to Coolmine train station. The design integrates new residential buildings with extensive public realm upgrades, podium landscaping, and a strong emphasis on sustainable design.

The landscape strategy prioritised biodiversity, accessibility, and community-focused spaces. Indigenous planting, rainwater attenuation features permeable paving and green infrastructure were utilised throughout.

Key features include two landscaped podium courtyards, a MUGA (multi-use games area), imaginative and inclusive children’s play spaces meeting ROSPA safety standards, an adult fitness trail, and integrated cycle and pedestrian paths to foster active movement and neighbourly interaction. The streetscape was designed using the principles of DMURS, incorporating permeable paving, shared surfaces, and distinct character zones to reinforce walkability and connectivity.

Completed in phases from 2020, Windmill, Porterstown stands as a strong example of high-quality urban landscape design—balancing residential density with green infrastructure, functional open space, and long-term ecological resilience in a suburban setting.
